The famed “fool’s gold”, pyrite is an abundant sulfide mineral that despite some similarities can easily be distinguished from actual gold by its crystal form (typically cuboidal) and being much harder whereas gold is soft and malleable. Pyrite formations tend to be shiny and metallic, with particularly high shine or uniquely shaped pieces prized by collectors.
Rainbow or peacock pyrite is a much rarer form of pyrite named for the unmistakable and incredibly vibrant rainbow-colored iridescence it displays. The spectacular display of colors these specimens display can be formed by two different geological processes: the oxidation of pyrite causing ultra-thin layers of iron oxide to form on the surface, or the formation of equally thin layers of secondary minerals due to hydrothermal or other alteration. This naturally occurring form of relatively common pyrite remains highly sought after by collectors as a specimen or for use as a gem or in jewelry.
